MFTBC has changed how it manages its production parts import supply chain through the integration of new software and AI
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) has launched a new method to improve efficiency in inbound parts logistics management at its production sites, dubbed the ‘supply chain control tower’.
MFTBC currently provides trucks, buses and industrial engines to approximately 170 markets worldwide, and is almost 90 per cent owned by Daimler Truck AG.
The new supply chain control tower aims to automate processes in addition to monitoring vessels carrying parts and estimating their arrival times at Japanese factories in real time.
The project is expected to improve stability in a supply chain cycle that has been continually disrupted by a litany of factors in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a recent shortage of semiconductors.
With one single truck or bus containing over 10,000 individual parts, ordering and transportation are generally organised by MFTBC in weekly or monthly cycles, however external issues including traffic, customs procedures or weather conditions can alter the arrival schedules of various ships containing crucial heavy vehicle manufacturing parts.
The supply chain control tower aims to remove the responsibility of tracking these ships from MFTBC’s logistics operators through the utilisation of API services to centrally monitor the real-time shipping status and reduce daily work time for operators.
Previously, operators would check the status of shipping vessels through calculations like browsing the website of vessel owners or via email.
The in-house developed system automates all parts ordering, calculation and input operations, which will also lead to a reduction in excess inventory and parts storage costs.
Newly introduced software has enabled inventory monitoring through automated cross-checking of vehicle production schedules and parts ordering plans.
The IBL control tower system utilised by MFTBC to optimise parts transportation from domestic suppliers is also part of the new supply chain control tower.
